Spain advance to World Cup QF after beating Iberian rivals Portugal

Substitute Mikel Merino scored a dramatic late winner to put Spain in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Portugal and end Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup career on Monday.

The European champions will face Belgium on Friday in Los Angeles.

In front of an expectant crowd of 70,649 at the air-conditioned home of the Dallas Cowboys, a match that on paper promised so much failed to deliver.

Extra time looked certain, before fellow substitute Ferran Torres slipped in Merino to settle the contest in the first minute of injury time.

Sánchez arrives at NATO summit ready to stand up to Trump

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, is reportedly preparing to stand his ground against Donald Trump over military spending at the NATO summit which begins this Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey.

Far from backing down following months of pressure from Washington to speed defence spending increases, the Spanish government is determined to maintain its rejection of the 5 percent GDP target.

Spain argues that it already meets the capability targets set by NATO without needing to raise spending to that threshold and refuses to enter into a race for higher percentages which, in its view, would ultimately result in cuts to social spending.

Madrid police officer runs over three young people during Madrid Pride celebrations

Three women in their twenties were injured after being hit by a Madrid municipal police officer who was riding a motorbike along Gran Vía as part of the Pride celebrations.

According to police sources and Emergencias Madrid, the incident took place near Calle Clavel at around 10.00 pm during Pride celebrations over the weekend.

One of the victims, aged 26, was taken to hospital in a potentially serious condition with a possible fractured femur. The other two young women suffered minor injuries and bruises.

Spain’s multi-property landlords earn four times more than tenants and have net wealth 450 times greater

Households that own two or more rental properties in Spain have a median annual income almost four times higher than that of those who rent.

Incredibly, their net wealth can be as much as 450 times that of tenants.

This is one of the main conclusions of a new report published the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda in collaboration with the CSIC’s Institute of Philosophy (IFS-CSIC), based on data from the Bank of Spain’s Household Finance Survey (EFF).

With additional reporting from AFP.
