Why do Swiss want to get closer to the European Union right now?

The new package of bilateral agreements concluded in December 2024 notwithstanding, Switzerland’s population increasingly seeks the security of its European neighbours. Why is that?

Given the impact that Donald Trump’s tariffs have had on the Swiss financial markets in the few days they were in effect – until they were temporarily put on hold on April 9th – the country’s population wants to seek shelter from the unpredictability and potential damage of the US policies in closer ties with the European Union.

This is what emerges from a new survey carried out in Switzerland by Tamedia media group.

Some 35,132 provided their views for the survey.

What does it show?

In a nutshell, most Swiss don’t like Donald Trump.

To the question: ”How do you rate the US president?” 81 percent of participants gave him a thumbs-down.

Among the most left-of-centre respondents, the proportion is even higher: 90 percent.

As to the reasons why the vast majority of survey participants dislike Donald Trump, words such as “unpredictable”, “egocentric”, “hypocritical” and “impulsive” are the most common.

Also, 76 percent of survey participants said they believe the US president will incite further global conflicts.

And that is why…

Some 77 percent of respondents in non-member Switzerland favour closer cooperation with the European Union to ensure the security of the country’s economy.

That’s an overall figure, but it goes up to between 84 and 90 percent among the most liberal respondents.
