Quality of life in Swiss cities can depend on avoiding being the victim of crime. So which city in Switzerland has the highest burglary rates?

The Swiss government has recently released a raft of statistics that build a picture of the quality of life in different cities around the country.

Some of those statistics focus on crime and in particular burglary.

So which city has the highest burglary rates?

In terms of city centres or “core cities” then it’s Basel, the city bordering France and Germany, that tops the pile. Although if the wider agglomeration is included then this pushes Geneva to the top spot. (see table below)

Lausanne’s central area has the second highest burglary rate. Zurich is ranked sixth for the rate of break ins.

Burglary stats for Switzerland

Stats for 2022 revealed that the canton of Zurich had the most burglaries, when it came to the total number of crimes, rather than the rate per 1,000 habitants.

Zurich: 6,935

Vaud: 3,955

Geneva: 3,334

Aargau: 3,145

Bern: 3,126

And here are figures for other cantons: Basel-City: 1,019; Basel-Country: 861; Solothurn: 1,052; Luzern: 1,027; Uri: 49; Schwyz 225; Obwalden: 65; Nidwalden: 50; Glarus: 101; Zug: 268; Fribourg: 264; Schaffhausen: 158; Appenzell-Ausserrhoden: 68; Appenzell-Innerrhoden: 15 (the lowest rate in Switzerland); St.Gallen: 1;081; Graubünden: 553; St.Gallen: 1,181; Thurgau: 656; Ticino: 596; Valais: 864; Neuchâtel: 615; and Jura: 197.

How can you reduce the chances of being burgled in Switzerland? Swiss authorities have released some useful, if obvious sounding advice.
