Trump accuses Spain of having ‘zero control’ over border with Morocco
The US President, Donald Trump, on Sunday accused the Spanish government of having “zero control” over its border with Morocco and described the migration situation in Ceuta as “sad”.
“It is very sad what is happening in Spain, a country that has no control over its border. Wow!” the US president said in a post on his social media accounts.
This is not the first time Trump has commented on the Ceuta border.
The US President already branded Spain a “ruined country” last Thursday, attributing the Ceuta situation to “weak laws” and “poor management” by Pedro Sánchez’s government, also stating that the Spanish authorities “didn’t know what to do” in the face of the mass arrival of migrants.
Spaniards believe there are almost twice as many immigrants than actually live in Spain
New survey data has shown that the Spanish population significantly overestimates the extent of immigration, unemployment amongst migrants, and the proportion of those receiving social benefits in Spain.
This is according to the conclusions of the latest study by the ISEAK Centre for Research and Knowledge Transfer in Economics, based on a survey of more than 3,000 people.
According to the study, those surveyed estimate that immigrants account for 27.8 percent of the Spanish population. The true figure used by the researchers at the time of the survey was 16 percent – practically half that amount.
A similar discrepancy was seen when asked about employment. Respondents believe that 41 percent of immigrants are unemployed, whilst the actual figure is 16 percent. Similarly, 55 percent of respondents believed that immigrants receive some form of social benefit, compared with the 11 percent indicated by the data.

Ten regions remained under a heat warning on Monday morning, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 40C in the Guadalquivir area.
At the other end of the spectrum, the eastern Cantabrian coast will see significant drops of more than 10C in maximum temperatures, according to the forecast by Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The regions under heat alert include: Andalucía; Aragón; Balearic Islands; Castilla y León; Castilla-La Mancha; Cataluña; Extremadura; Madrid; Murcia; Navarra; Valencia.
Spain to appear larger on new UN map
Spain, along with several other countries, will grow in size on a new map rolled out by the UN that more accurately reflects the actual size of continents.
The UN General Assembly recently approved the Equal Earth model to correct size distortions on the traditional Mercator map. Some 164 countries voted in favour, with only the United States voting against and Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Morocco, Serbia and Ukraine abstaining.
The US rejection stemmed from the fact that the new map reduces the country’s apparent size compared with traditional maps.
The adjustment also reduces the disproportionate size of the northern part of the continent and, according to Spanish media reports, “restores the Iberian Peninsula’s true geographical significance relative to powers such as Germany or the United Kingdom”.
