In Chennai, BJP members stage dharna denouncing DMK bid to influence voters
Members of the BJP resorted to a sudden dharna in front of a polling station in Mylapore constituency here on Thursday protesting against a few DMK members for allegedly attempting to influence voters.
Voting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election across 234 segments commenced at 7 AM.
The Mylapore BJP candidate and former Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, who rushed to the spot, alleged that a few DMK members boldly displayed that party’s Rising Sun symbol and attempted to influence the voters standing in the queue to exercise their franchise.
“They are neither voters nor party agents. These individuals displayed DMK symbol and Chief Minister M K Stalin’s photos on their phones. If they think they can get votes by unleashing anarchy, then they will not succeed. Stalin should not think of getting votes by crushing our voice. People are aware of the DMK’s rowdyism. We cannot accept it,” Soundararajan told reporters and added that there was sufficient proof to substantiate her claims.
She wondered how the polling officials could allow those people.
Meanwhile, the BJP members who staged the protest at the St Francis Xavier School, one of the polling centres in the constituency, raised slogans denouncing the chief minister.

80 per cent challenge: Why TN needs historic turnout just to match 2021 numbers
Under the watchful eyes of over 3.6 lakh polling personnel and a statewide security blanket, Tamil Nadu begins its march to the booths on Thursday.
This morning’s commencement of the Assembly elections marks more than a routine transfer of power; it is the culmination of a 74-year democratic evolution. With exactly 5.73 crore people eligible to cast their ballots, the fundamental question looming over today’s proceedings is whether a record-breaking surge of nearly 14.6 lakh first-time voters can finally shatter the historic participation ceiling set over a decade ago.
To understand the significance of today’s numbers, one must look at the arc of Tamil Nadu’s electoral participation.

TN Assembly polls: TVK seeks CEC intervention over transport paralysis; urges poll hour extension by two hours
The Tamil Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking urgent intervention to address what it described as a “transport paralysis” that has left thousands of voters stranded across Tamil Nadu on polling day.
In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, the party founder Joseph Vijay expressed “deep concern and indignation” over the lack of public transport, alleging that thousands of voters were unable to reach polling booths due to the large-scale requisitioning of buses for election duty.
“The complete absence of buses or alternative public transport is not a minor inconvenience—it appears to be a case of serious misplanning by the State Transport Corporation and administration, amounting to an assault on the fundamental right to vote,” Vijay said.
He pointed to chaotic scenes at major bus terminals including Koyambedu Bus Terminus, Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, and Madhavaram Bus Terminus, where large numbers of commuters were reportedly stranded.
