Switzerland’s Basel EuroAirport announces plans to double in size

Smaller than other two Swiss airports, Zurich and Geneva, EuroAiport has ambitious plans to increase its terminal capacity by 2030.

The airport will invest 125 million francs to accomplish this goal.

Its current 15,000-square-metre terminal will be renovated and flanked by a new building of equivalent size in order to “improve the quality of service” according to the airport’s management.

The plan is in response to a positive evolution of passenger traffic in the past several years.

The airport serves more than 90 destinations and has seen a significant recovery in traffic after the Covid pandemic.

Nearly 9 million passengers flew into or out of the EuroAirport  in 2024 — the second-best performance in its 75-year history.

Its management expects to reach a new record in 2025 — 9.2 million passengers — the reason why the expansion of the airport is seen as necessary.

With the doubled capacity,  the airport could, in the future, provide a viable alternative (at least for short and medium-haul flights) to Zurich, less than 100 km away.

However, according to EuroAirport’s management, “we are not in competition” with Zurich.

Unlike Zurich (ZRH), which is located entirely on Swiss territory, and Geneva (GVA), which straddles both Switzerland and France, by its geography, EuroAirport is the most ‘international’ of all.

That’s because it lies in Saint-Louis, France, but also services Basel (7 km away), as well as the nearby German city of Freiburg and French city of Mulhouse.

That’s why the airport’s official name is the rather long ‘EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg’, and it has not one but three codes: BSL is the Swiss code, MLH is the French one, and EAP (EuroAirport) is the international code.

Unlike Geneva’s airport, which has a French sector but is wholly owned by the canton of Geneva, EuroAirport was developed (and is operated) jointly by two countries — France and Switzerland.

What airlines operate from EuroAirport?

Unlike is the case in Zurich and Geneva, SWISS airline is not the airport’s main carrier — in fact, it doesn’t operate from EuroAirport at all.

Of the major airlines that fly to and from this airport is Lufthansa, Austrian, British Airways, Air France, Turkish Airlines, and KLM.

Most operators, however, are low-cost airlines.

Foremost among them is EasyJet, but RyanAir and WizzAir, as well as lesser-known ones like AirTransat, EnterAir, and Chair Airlines, are also present.

They fly to destinations like Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Dubai, Israel, and Morocco, among others.

This link shows all the airlines and destinations that can be reached from EuroAirport.
