“Nightjet,” which the SBB inaugurated in Zurich on December 4th, is the newest overnight train to connect Switzerland with European cities.
The new train, operated by the SBB jointly with Austria’s national railway company ÖBB, will initially run between Zurich and Hamburg.
But this route will be gradually expanded in 2026, operating on the Zurich–Vienna and Zurich–Amsterdam lines.
To mark the occasion, the first train was christened “City of Zurich” in the presence of representatives from the SBB and ÖBB, along with municipal authorities.
“This train will carry the name of our city throughout Europe,” said City Councillor Andreas Hauri.
A comfortable ride
On board the new Nightjet, passengers will find fixed beds for a stable sleep, as well as “Comfort Plus” sleeping cars with a shower and workspace, as well as the “Mini Cabins” – private areas with a movable breakfast table, a mirror, and a reading lamp.
For people traveling as a couple, two cabins can be connected via a sliding door.
Additionally, a compartment with low-floor access and special toilets is provided for people with reduced mobility.
There is also space for bicycles and sports equipment.
Technology will be a key feature of these night trains as well, the SBB said.
NFC card access (similar to that in hotels), touch screens, USB ports, induction charging, and high-performance Wi-Fi will be available on board.
Additionally, the trains will be equipped with a new customer information system and video surveillance outside the cabins.

Joining a wider network
The Nightjet is the newest addition to many other cross-border services operating between Swiss and European cities.
Among them are trains from Zurich to Milan; Bologna and Florence; Lausanne (via Geneva) to Marseille, and from Chur to Berlin, in addition to several others:
