To slash its operating costs, Switzerland’s second-largest telecommunications provider, Sunrise, will cut up to 450 full-time positions.

Aiming for “substantial cost savings,” the Glattbrugg, Zurich-based company announced on September 21st that it could eliminate up to 450 full-time jobs, out of its total workforce of 2,900.

“Sunrise is planning a fundamental restructuring of its operating model to anticipate emerging market and technological trends, and to sustainably strengthen its operational execution capabilities and market position,” the company said.

‘Substantial savings’

The company, which previously announced it would lay off 147 employees, said it is targeting “substantial savings” in the medium term, though it did not specify the amount.

It also did not say whether the newly announced redundancies would include, or be in addition to, those announced earlier.

Additionally, it is not clear at this point which positions could be eliminated, as the company said that employees working in its retail stores, sales, and customer service are expected to be largely unaffected by the changes.

The latest in the growing wave of cuts

Sunrise joins a lengthening list of companies in Switzerland which already have, or will in the near future, eliminate a significant number of jobs throughout the country – a trend touching a wide variety of industries:
