BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 27. The preparatory
session on the trial of Ruben Vardanyan, an Armenian citizen
accused under articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of
Azerbaijan of torture, mercenarism, violation of laws and customs
of war, terrorism, financing of terrorism, and other articles, was
continued today, Trend reports.
Vardanyan petitioned to allow him another 30 days to review the
case, but the petition was rejected.
Although during the preliminary investigation, Vardanyan was
provided enough time to familiarize himself with the materials of
the criminal case in the language he knows and to prepare for his
own defense, the court decided to satisfy the motion taking into
account the defendant’s request and gave him an additional 10 days
to review the materials of the case.
To note, Ruben Vardanyan is charged under the following articles
of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan: 100 (planning,
preparation, unleashing or waging a war of aggression), 107
(deportation or forced resettlement of population), 109
(persecution), 112 (deprivation of liberty in violation of
international law ), 113 (use of torture), 114 (mercenarism), 115
(violation of laws and customs of war), 116 (violation of
international humanitarian law during armed conflicts), 214
(terrorism), 214-1 (financing of terrorism), 218 (organization of
criminal association (criminal organization), 228 (illegal
acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of
firearms, firearms components, ammunition, explosives and explosive
devices), 270-1 (acts endangering aviation safety), 278 (forcible
seizure of power or forcible retention of power or forcible change
in the constitutional order of the State), 279 (establishment of
armed formations or groups not provided for by law) and other acts
punishable under other articles of the Criminal Code.
