
The psychological horror film Mag-iina, took home the trophy for Best Film at the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival during the awards ceremony on Aug. 17 at the Shangri-La Plaza, one of six awards it won that night.
Directed by Giancarlo Abrahan and written by Guelan Varela Luarca, the film follows three generations of women bound by grief, madness, and a dark family secret.
The evening was filled with shared awards, as four categories found themselves with two winners.
One of these was Best Director which saw Mag-iina’s Abrahan sharing the title with Gabriela Serrano who was honored for her work in the film Elenita Elena Elaine.
Also sharing trophies were the winners for Best Actress (shared by Ruby Ruiz and Marietta “Pokwang” Subong), Best Supporting Actor (Lucas Andalio and K.D. Omalin), and the Special Jury Prize (2 Valid IDs and Para-paraan).
