At the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition in Paris, the Finnish Defence Forces and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) signed an Implementation Arrangement to cooperate on preparations for the procurement of the Patria TRACKX tracked armoured personnel carrier, designed for operations in Arctic and other challenging environments.
Patria TRACKX was developed under the FAMOUS programme, a collaborative European project supported by the European Defence Fund (EDF) and its predecessor, the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP). Bringing together close to 20 partners from across Europe, the programme demonstrates the added value of European industrial cooperation. To date, FAMOUS has already received nearly €100 million in EU funding.
The vehicle combines features traditionally associated with both wheeled and tracked platforms, providing high mobility across diverse terrains and weather conditions, while offering ballistic protection and operational flexibility. For Finland and Sweden, it represents an important capability for enhancing the mobility of land forces operating in harsh terrains.
Under this agreement, Finland and Sweden will cooperate in preparing the first procurement phase of the vehicle. Future purchasing decisions will remain a national responsibility. This marks a significant step in translating EDF-supported research and development into concrete defence capabilities for Member States.
Next steps
Following earlier EDIDP- and EDF-funded phases focused on next-generation armoured platforms and the modernization of existing systems, the newly launched FAMOUS3 project will further mature key technologies and advance them towards qualification and certification, bringing European armoured vehicle capabilities closer to operational deployment.
