
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the train crash in Andalusia that left 39 people dead as a “night of deep pain” for the country.
“Today is a night of deep pain for our country owing to the tragic rail accident in Adamuz,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on X.
“I want to express my sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. No word can alleviate such great suffering, but I want them to know that the whole country is by their side in this tough moment,” he added.
At least 39 people were killed and 75 others left needing hospital treatment after two high-speed trains collided near the Andalusian city of Córdoba on Sunday night.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia said on Sunday they were following “with great concern” news of a train disaster in southern Spain.
“We are following with great concern the serious accident between two high-speed trains in Adamuz,” the royal palace said on X.
“We extend our most heartfelt condolences to the relatives and loved ones of the dead, as well as our love and wishes for a swift recovery to the injured,” it added.

French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen were among the world leaders offering condolences.
The disaster struck on Sunday evening when a service travelling from Málaga to Madrid derailed near Adamuz, crossing onto the other track where it crashed into an oncoming train, which also derailed.
