The border between Geneva and France will shift; Switzerland remains the most competitive country is the word; and other news in our Wednesday roundup.

The border between Geneva and France will change

Due in part to construction work, the boundaries will shift in three areas, but the exchanged territories will remain the same.

On Tuesday, Switzerland and France signed three agreements in Bern regarding the rectification of the national border between the canton of Geneva and the department of Haute-Savoie.

The adjustments concern the Hermance and Foron sectors, as well as the border area of Perly-Certoux and Bardonnex.

Furthermore, as part of the construction of a new cross-border tram line between the Swiss commune of Perly-Certoux and the French commune of Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, an adaptation of the state border is necessary as well.

Switzerland is (still) the world’s most competitive nation

You have probably heard this already: Switzerland was already in the first place among 69 economies in the World Competitiveness Ranking in June.

Now, another study – the ‘Competitiveness Report 2025’ of the think tank Eight Competitiveness Lab – also placed Switzerland in the top spot, ahead of 57 other countries.

Switzerland placed so highly thanks to “its solid economic base, robust infrastructure, strong innovative capacity and fiscal conditions,” the report found.

Switzerland and the UK extend the agreement on the mobility of service suppliers

The two countries prolonged the Services Mobility Agreement (SMA), which was set to expire in December of this year; it will now remain in effect  until December 31st, 2029, the government announced on Tuesday.

The SMA regulates reciprocal market access and the temporary residence of service suppliers such as management consultants, IT experts, and engineers since the free movement of persons agreement between the two nations ended following the UK’s exit from the EU in 2021.
