More than 15,000 illegal tourist apartments located in Madrid
Spain’s Consumer Affairs Ministry has identified more than 15,200 tourist apartments operating without a licence in the Spanish capital and has asked Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida to take down their ads from portals such as Airbnb.
Out of the 16,335 tourist accommodation units in residential buildings in the city, only 1,131 have been granted the licence needed to operate.
Almeida has previously argued that his government is the only one in Madrid to have taken action against these illicit holiday lets, but in 2024 city hall inspectors only managed to stop 215 tourist lets from operating.

Woman ‘fed up of walking her dogs’ throws them from 8th floor
A 53-year-old woman in Alicante has been arrested after she was accused of killing her two Yorkshire terriers by throwing them out of the window of her 8th floor apartment.
According to Spanish news agency EFE, she has confessed to her actions and has told authorities that she did it because she was “fed up” of “always” having to take them out for walks and pick up their faeces.
Witnesses told police that they had also seen other objects being thrown from the eighth floor, including pet tortoises which were found on the pavement.
Catalonia to lower income tax for mid-to-low earners
The Catalan government on Monday reached an agreement with ERC (The Catalan Republican Socialist Workers’ Party) to reduce the regional income tax bracket, which will benefit taxpayers with gross incomes of less than €33,000 per year.
According to Catalunya Ràdio, the Catalan government’s proposal consists of reducing the regional tax rate for the first tax bracket by one percentage point: from the current 10.5 percent to 9.5 percent.

Four consecutive storms have caused damages to at least 12,000 hectares of agricultural produce in regions such as Murcia and Andalusia.
Red fruits, peas, broccoli and cauliflower were all due to be harvested but this will now have to be delayed.
On the other hand, the abundant rainfall has been “very beneficial” for cereals, olive groves, fruit trees, vineyards,nuts, and of course for the reservoirs and aquifers that supply them with water, the Spanish Association of Agricultural Insurance Companies Agroseguro has pointed out.
