The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok issued a security alert for its citizens in Thailand, following the deportation of a group of Uyghurs to China. .

  • The embassy warned that similar deportations in the past have led to violent retaliatory attacks, citing a specific incident in 2015.
  • The 2015 incident involved improvised explosive devices at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, which resulted in 20 deaths and 125 injuries, primarily affecting tourists from China.

The alert highlighted past instances of violent retaliatory attacks following similar deportations, most notably the 2015 Erawan Shrine bombing in Bangkok, which resulted in 20 deaths and 125 injuries. The shrine is a popular tourist spot, particularly for visitors from China. Thailand’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism.

The Thai authorities concluded that the bombing was linked to a crackdown on a human trafficking ring, but did not specifically link it to the Uyghurs. Two ethnic Uyghur men were arrested in connection with the incident, and their trial is still ongoing despite repeated delays.

To stay informed and receive alerts, U.S. citizens are advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and follow the Department of State on social media.
