Lufthansa, SWISS airline’s parent company, reportedly seeks to centralise more operations in Germany, at the detriment of Zurich airport.
In concrete terms, Lufthansa wants to ‘move’ certain flights from Zurich to Frankfurt and Munich, according to the RTS public broadcaster.
“The message is clear: from 2026, strategic decisions will be made in Germany,” RTS reported, adding that this implies “pooling routes, centralising scheduling, sales, and marketing in Frankfurt.”
“As for SWISS employees, we don’t really know what the future holds,” said Philipp Hadorn, president of the ground staff union at Zurich airport.
Which flights will be affected?
That is not yet clear, but according to aviation expert Benjamin Sinclair, the centralisation of SWISS routes in Germany “should lead to the abandonment of the least profitable long-haul flights from Zurich in favour of German airports.”
This means that some of the direct flights from Zurich to destinations like North America and Asia could be scrapped, and passengers from Zurich would have to transit via Germany to reach those destinations.
What about Geneva?
No word yet concerning the plans that Lufthansa might have for SWISS flights departing from this airport.
However, RTS reported that Geneva “could keep its only long-haul route operated by SWISS, the one to New York.”
