In a new survey published by Newsweek magazine in the United States, Zurich’s University Hospital (USZ) is in the 10th place of the world’s top-rated hospitals.

It is also number 1 in Switzerland.

How were the hospitals rated?

In all, over 2,400 medical facilities in 30 countries were rated.

According to Newsweek, which carried out the survey together with the global data platform Statista, “the assessment considers performance in five categories: provision of care, timeliness of care, patient experience and safety, IT and health care technology, and employer attractiveness.”

What makes the USZ worthy of such a high score?

The survey doesn’t provide much detail, but the hospital itself does (though obviously the self-assessment is not necessarily totally unbiased).

“Our staff guarantee comprehensive and individualized medical care across specialist boundaries,” according to its website.

But that’s not all – the USZ also says it is “the only Swiss hospital to offer some therapies”.

Though it doesn’t specify which ones exactly, its doctors have performed the world’s first microsurgery on the lympathic system, as well as a new surgical approach to aortic replacement, among other cutting-edge treatments.

Some of the USZ’s practices have been elaborated in collaboration with the Zurich Polytechnic Institute (ETH), which has been named several times as the best university in continental Europe.

Do patients have to pay to be treated at the USZ?

As in all Swiss hospitals, treatment is covered by the obligatory health insurance, KVG / LaMal.

Which other Swiss hospitals are highly rated in the Newsweek survey?

The University Hospital Basel is in the 12th place, followed by the University Hospital Vaud (CHUV) in the 12th.
