Christmas is just around the corner, so if you haven’t got your tree yet and you want to buy a real one rather than a plastic one, here’s where you can find them in Spain.

There’s always the big debate between people about what’s better – a fake tree you can use year after year or a real one with natural pine sent that can be recycled for wood or replanted.

If you’re not a fan of buying more plastic though, then a real one is the way to go. In Spanish fir trees are known as abetos, while real Christmas trees more generally are known as árboles naturales de Navidad.

There are may not be many big Christmas tree farms in Spain, like there are in the US or the UK where you can go and choose your own, but there are still plenty of places to get one.

Christmas markets

Christmas markets in Spain typically focus on decorations, Nativity scenes and yes, trees, rather than just gifts and handicrafts. In Barcelona for example, trees can be bought from the Fira de Santa Lucía in front of the Cathedral and the Fira de Nadal de la Sagrada Família. The only problem is that you typically have to live near one of these markets to be able to carry a tree home, although some stalls will deliver to your house.

Florists and garden centres

During this time of year, many plant and flower shops (floristerías), as well as garden centres in Spain buy in a load of real trees to sell. Some you’ll find in town and city centres, while garden centres (viveros in Spanish) are typically on the outskirts. This option is best if you have your own car to transport your tree, but some will also do deliveries.

Chinese bazaars

These rabbit-warren-like shops that sell everything in Spain and are typically run by members of the Chinese community usually sell a lot of products made from plastic, but in recent years many have transformed partly into plant stores too. In the spring and summer, they’ll sell flowers, house plants and herbs in pots, while in the winter it will be Christmas plants and yes, real trees. They typically sell their trees for less money than regular florists and can be a good option if you don’t live close to any big Christmas markets.

Be aware that these types of shops are not the same in all regions in Spain. In Catalonia and Valencia in particular you’re more likely find real trees for sale.

Online

If you don’t live near any shops or markets selling trees or you’re after a really big one that you can’t carry, then buying online is best. There are many websites you can order real trees from that will deliver to your home. These include Flor España, Mi Arbol de Navidad, Viveros la Dama and Verdecora. They typically deliver all over the country. There will be other more local shops that will deliver to specific areas as well such as Flores de Navarro in Barcelona.

Lidl

If you only have space for a very small real tree, then supermarket chain Lidl is the place to go. They are selling potted fir trees for between 55 and 65cm for just €8.99, which already comes adorned with baubles.

For rent

Although it may seem like an odd concept, renting a Christmas tree is becoming a more popular concept in Spain, particularly because many people live in apartments and there’s no space to keep artificial ones stored all year round or boxes of decorations and lights. It’s also an option popular with companies, for events or business owners.

There are several places nowadays who will temporarily rent out trees, complete with lights and ornaments. One of the most popular of these is B&M, a family business based in Madrid, with rental options costing from €265 to €2,800.
