Spain’s plan to give hundreds of thousands of irregular migrants the right to stay in the country legally has garnered international headlines.

At a time when anti-immigrant rhetoric is the norm, the country’s Socialist government has bucked the trend across the continent and world, making the humanitarian, economic and demographic arguments for immigration.

The proposal has proven controversial, adding to political polarisation in Spain and leading to several misconceptions and swathes of misinformation.
