Europeans, including Britons, can enter the US without a visa for a short stay, but they must complete a visa waiver, the ESTA, which has recently almost doubled in price.
At the start of October, the US government increased the price of the ESTA, the travel document required for non-citizens visiting the United States for a short visit (under 90 days) from ‘visa waiver’ countries, which includes EU/Schengen nations, the UK and other visa waiver countries like Japan.
The ESTA price increased from $21 to $40, as part of the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’, which was enshrined on July 4th, 2025.
Who needs an ESTA?
Europeans wishing to visit the US for a holiday can enter the country without a visa, but they do need to complete ESTA (Electronic system for travel authorisation).
As such, if you are an American citizen travelling with your EU partner or friend (who does not have an existing visa or green card), then they will need to purchase an ESTA before the trip.
They will not be allowed to board the flight to the US without having completed this document. You can find the official government link to request one here.
The application itself takes a little over 20 minutes to complete, but you may not get a response for a few days. Try to complete it as early as possible before travel.

The ESTA remains valid for two years, but if your passport expires before the two years have ended, then you will need to request a new one to go with your new passport.
What about US citizens?
As a US citizen, you do not need an ESTA, but if you hold dual nationality, you must remember to enter the country with your US passport.
