Vladyslav, a member of Ukraine’s National Guard, had suffered a nearly fatal wound to his throat before an emergency crew found him near the front line in the Donetsk region. Recovering at a hospital and unable to speak, Vladyslav wrote an account of his ordeal, saying he had been taken captive, tortured, and left for dead with his comrades before crawling for five days to reach Ukrainian-held territory.
