US President Donald Trump on Monday evening left the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Alberta, Canada, early to deal with the conflict in the Middle East.

The escalating clash between Israel and Iran has overshadowed most of the gathering, with the leaders signing a joint statement urging a “de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.”

The BBC’s James Landale highlights the role of the US president at the summit, and how despite his early departure, his presence still lingers.
