If you live in Barcelona or somewhere else in Catalonia, it’s important to be aware of the regional tax deductions available to you before you file your annual tax return, covering everything from housing, to donations and child costs.

Spain’s income tax campaign began on April 8th, meaning that you have between now and June 30th to file your return, known as the declaración de la renta, for income earned in 2025.

Each region is Spain has its own regulations on what you can and what tax deductions you can benefit from on your return.

Here’s what you can deduct if you live in Catalonia.

Rent

Deductions for rent of your primary residence have increased this year from €300 to €500 for individual tax returns and from €600 to €1,000 for joint returns. To be eligible, you must meet specific requirements. These include being under 35 years old, having been unemployed for 183 days or more during 2025, having a disability rating of 65 percent or higher, or being a widow or widower over 65 years of age.

Renovations

If you own your own home, you can deduct 1.5 percent of the amounts paid for renovations, if it’s your primary residence. The maximum deduction is €9,040 per year.

Donations

If you donated to certain charities or organisations last year, you can also make several deductions, depending on what they were.

You can deduct 15 percent of donations made to organisations that promote the Catalan language, up to a maximum of 10 percent of your total regional tax liability.

You can also deduct 25 percent of donations made to organisations that promote scientific research, development, and technological innovation, also up to a maximum of 10 percent of your total regional tax liability. Donations must be made to universities or other research centres affiliated with Catalan universities or promoted or supported by the Catalan Government.

Donations to organisations which help protect the environment or conserve natural heritage are also tax-deductible at 15 percent. The maximum deduction is 5 percent of your regional tax liability.

Education

If you studied in higher education last year, you can deduct the interest on loans used for a master’s or doctorate degree. To be eligible, the financing must have been granted through the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants.

Family

Parents in Catalonia can deduct €150 for each child born or adopted in 2025. If the tax return is filed individually, each parent receives this amount. If it is filed jointly, the deduction is double this amount per child.

Taxpayers who became widowed in 2025 can also claim a deduction of €150, as well as on income returns for the next two years. If you have dependent children, the amount increases to €300.

Investments

You can also deduct 40 percent, up to a limit of €6,000, on amounts invested as an angel investor. When it comes to companies created or owned by universities or research centres, this increases to 50 percent, with a maximum of €12,000.

To benefit from this deduction, your shareholding (or that added to those of your family members) cannot be more than 35 percent. You also can’t apply for this deduction if you hold management position in the company or are an employee. It must also be a public limited company, cannot be listed on stock exchanges and must have been incorporated within the last three years.

It’s important to note that these specific deductions are only applicable to those living in Catalonia, if you live in a different region, they might not all be available to you. If you think you may be eligible for one of these deductions, you should contact your gestor or accountant to find out more. It’s worth also keeping in mind that they are not automatically applied, so you must apply for them on your tax return.
