Thailand’s proposed Game Industry Act will regulate online games, prevent gambling features, and boost the sector’s global competitiveness, with laws expected by 2025, amid ongoing debate over casino legislation.
The act aims to establish a clear framework for game developers and publishers, ensuring ethical practices and consumer protection. It also seeks to attract foreign investment and foster innovation within the gaming industry. Meanwhile, discussions around casino legislation remain contentious, as policymakers weigh potential economic benefits against social concerns.
Thailand is proposing the Game Industry Act to regulate digital games and prevent gambling elements. Drafted in March, it aims to be enacted by 2025, establishing a regulatory body, ensuring features like lucky draws are not classified as gambling, and creating a tax framework. This law seeks to promote fair competition and safety within the gaming sector. The proposed Game Industry Act also emphasizes protecting minors from harmful content and excessive gaming. It plans to introduce strict age verification systems and parental controls to ensure responsible gaming practices. Additionally, the act aims to encourage local game development by providing incentives and support for Thai developers, fostering innovation and boosting the economy. By addressing these key aspects, the legislation intends to position Thailand as a competitive player in the global gaming industry while safeguarding its citizens.
The country’s gaming industry is valued at around 40 billion baht ($1.23 billion) and could grow to 100 billion baht over the next decade. Experts believe the legislation will boost Thailand’s global competitiveness, especially in esports and digital entertainment.
While recent efforts to legalize land-based casinos were halted, the Game Industry Act positions Thailand as the first ASEAN country with dedicated gaming legislation. A major gaming event, Gamescom Asia 2025, will also be held in Bangkok, highlighting the sector’s growing influence.
