Thailand aims to boost tourism with free domestic flights for 200,000 international visitors over three months, addressing declining numbers and promoting regional tourist growth.
Thailand, once the world’s top tourist destination, has seen a drop in visitors, prompting a promotional campaign. In 2019, nearly 40 million international tourists contributed significantly to the economy. The country’s target was 39 million arrivals by 2025, but this year, only 20.8 million tourists have arrived, leading to a revised goal of 33 million.
To boost tourism, Thailand plans to give away 200,000 free domestic flights over the next three months. This initiative aims to generate THB 8.8 billion ($245 million) and promote tourist spread beyond Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revive the country’s tourism-dependent economy, which has faced challenges due to global economic uncertainties and shifting travel trends. By offering complimentary flights, authorities hope to encourage travelers to explore lesser-known destinations within Thailand, spreading economic benefits beyond major cities like Bangkok and Phuket. The program also seeks to strengthen Thailand’s position as a top travel destination in Southeast Asia, fostering cultural exchange and enhancing visitor experiences.
The ‘Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights’ scheme allows eligible visitors to receive free return domestic flights when booking international travel through partner airlines. The program involves six Thai airlines and is expected to run from September to November, pending government approval.
