Tech Mahindra on Monday denied social media rumours of an upcoming layoff of upto 30,000 employees.
“The company has received calls and has noted certain social media posts regarding a market rumour of a potential significant reduction in headcount. In view of the above speculation, the company on its own accord considers it necessary to clarify to the Stock Exchanges that no such proposal is under consideration and categorically denies any such market rumours,” said Tech Mahindra in exchange filing.
Earlier, claims of massive layoffs went viral on micro-blogging platform X that linked the alleged downsizing to increased AI adoption in the tech sector. However, Tech Mahindra denied these claims.
Labour unions such as NITES and UNITE also told businessline that they have not received such complaints from members or employees. However, one union pointed out that downsizing in the name of cost-cutting has become an ongoing trend among companies.
The company reported an annual and sequential dip in its total headcount in Q2 of FY26. However, company CEO Mohit Joshi at the time said he did not consider a 2-3 per cent headcount decline as “a plunge.” Stating that the company is looking at new pricing models in the AI age, Joshi said people are now expected to show high levels of productivity, both from a development and support perspective. Overall, there’s an uncertainty within the tech sector pertaining to jobs.
