The official beginning of the summer season is not until June 21st, but Switzerland is about to experience very hot weather in the coming days.
It has been getting progressively warmer across the country since the Pentecost Monday, and more of the same — and even more so — is expected at least for the next eight days.
This is what lies ahead:
According to Switzerland’s official weather service MeteoSchweiz, “temperatures are expected to rise sharply from Thursday and reach or exceed heatwave thresholds on Friday and Saturday.”
(In Switzerland, a heatwave is defined as a period of at least three consecutive days with an average daily temperature of 25C).
However, MeteoSchweiz’s short-term forecast indicates that this threshold will be exceeded.
From Thursday, 29C are forecast for German and French-speaking parts of Switzerland, while the temperature in the southern regions will reach 30C.
From then on, it will get even hotter: 31C or 32C, and mostly sunny, in all regions through Friday.
What about the weekend?
More of the same is forecast for Saturday, though clouds will gather in most of Switzerland.
On Sunday, temperatures will drop — but only slightly — in east, north, and west (25C-26C), but will remain at 30C in the south.
However, it will rain everywhere, with French-speaking areas experiencing thunder and lightening too.
And then?
From Monday to Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny, with temperatures not exceeding 29C.
MeteoSchweiz has not released a long-term forecast yet, so we don’t know what awaits us when the ‘real’ simmer arrives on June 21st.

This is great news for sun worshippers, but…
As every year when a heatwave sweeps the country, you may wish for cooler air indoors.
You may find it in public venues like supermarkets, but most likely not in your home.
The reason is the same as in previous years:
