Residents in Switzerland should brace for cold weather and possibly snow in both the mountains and lowlands this week, as a cold front moves in.
Following last week’s warm temperatures, a large low-pressure system over Northern Europe will bring freezing temperatures to the region starting Monday, according to Switzerland’s Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology.
The office of meteorology recommends wearing warm winter clothes this week, as high temperatures are unlikely to get much above 5C.
A Level 2 snow warning is in place for mountain regions starting on Monday. At elevations above 1,000 meters, 5 to 15cm of snow is expected, and above 1400 meters, 15 to 35 cm of fresh snow is expected, and above 1000 m, another 5 to 15 cm. Snow could reach elevations as low as 500 meters on Monday.

Starting Thursday and continuing into the weekend, snow is possible in the lowlands, though significant accumulations are unlikely.
In November of last year, Switzerland saw similar wintry conditions, according to the office of meteorology. Record amounts of snowfall for the month of November were recorded at several weather stations, including in Luzern, which saw 42cm of snow on Nov. 22, 2024.
