Several people have been killed and injured after a bus crashed into a bus stop in central Stockholm, Swedish police say.

The accident happened around 15:00 (14:00 GMT) on the Valhallavägen street in the Swedish capital.

In a statement, police said the incident had been classified as aggravated manslaughter.

Police said they were not commenting on the number, gender or ages of those affected at this time.

National broadcaster SVT quoted a communications manager at Transdev, which operates local bus services in north Stockholm, saying that the double decker bus belonged to the company.

A witness who owns a shop on the street told SVT that the bus hit a pole in front of the bus shelter. They said several people ran into the shop crying.
