The Spanish island of Tenerife will have new flights to two Canadian cities starting this autumn, making it the only direct flight link between the Canary Islands and North America.

Tenerife South-Reina Sofía International Airport will add two new transatlantic connections by the end of the year, connecting the island with Canada.

Air Canada is to begin operating direct flights to Tenerife from Toronto and Montreal from October 2026, with the service initially running throughout the winter season until April 2027, according to information from the local authorities.

In a press release the local government announced three weekly flights, two from Toronto and one from Montreal.

“The arrival of Air Canada with direct flights from Toronto and Montreal represents a strategic boost for Tenerife, cementing our destination’s position as a global leader and bringing high-spending travellers closer to the island,’ said CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, Dimple Melwani.

Flights from Toronto to Tenerife will start from 25th October 2026, operating on Thursdays and Sundays to the island with return flights on Mondays and Fridays, whilst the Montreal service will depart for Tenerife on Saturdays from 31st October, with return flights on Sundays.

Air Canada’s flights will use the airline’s new Airbus A321XLR with a capacity of 182 passengers.

Flight times between both Montreal and Tenerife will be between 7 and 8 hours and 15 minutes, whereas the Toronto-Tenerife flight time will range from 7 hours and 25 minutes to 8 hours and 55 minutes.

This will be first time Tenerife has a direct flight link with Canada and it represents the only non-stop connection between the Canaries and North America currently.

There was previously a direct link between Tenerife and New York but this was cancelled in 2025 after three years of operations.

In 2025, Tenerife received a total of 38,119 passengers from Canada and the United States, of whom 8,026 came from Canada, almost 5,000 more than in 2019, when 3,331 were recorded.

The most significant origin cities are Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the number of US passengers arriving in Tenerife last year stood at 30,093, 5.6 percent more than in 2024, and almost double the figure for 2019.

Most American passengers were from New York, Miami, Boston, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco.

The new Tenerife-Canada connections are not the only new flight routes between Spain and ‘The Great White North’.

Air Canada will operate with four weekly frequencies between Mallorca (in Spain’s other archipelago – the Balearic Islands) and Montreal between June and October of this year.

Spain’s flagship carrier Iberia will also start operating between Madrid and Toronto from June 13th 2026 with weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Air Transat began operating direct flights between Valencia and Montreal in June 2025. It will also operate during the winter and spring months starting in February 2026.
