Geneva airport has been forced to alert passengers about sites offering to sell back lost luggage.
In a message posted on its website on May 19th, the airport is alerting passengers about several fraudulent sites “which falsely claim to be associated with our organisation.”
“These websites, which pretend to sell lost luggage, are clear attempts at scamming,” the airport’s management said.
It added that “anyone who comes across such sites should be aware that Geneva Airport never sells lost luggage, so these claims are fraudulent.
If unsure about the legitimacy of such sites, pay attention to the following:
- Unusual or strange URLs that do not match the official domain name GVA.CH.
- The absence of footers with links to terms and conditions or legal notices.
- Menus that are not clickable or functional.
Déjà-vu
In fact, this particular scam is nothing new in Switzerland because tin 2023, Zurich airport also fell victim to this fraudulent scheme.
Fake posts, allegedly from Zurich Airport, were making the rounds on social media.
They advertised the sale of lost luggage at bargain prices — 1.95 francs per suitcase.
Apparently, unknown individuals created a fake Zurich Airport account to advertise the sale.
Just like Geneva airport is doing now, Zurich airport’s spokesperson Elena Kuriger, also urged the public not to fall for this scam.
While the offer may sound very tempting to bargain hunters, “don’t rush to the airport” hoping to take advantage of this (non-existent) sale, she said at the time.
