In a rare occurrence in Switzerland, some of the ground staff at Zurich airport went on strike on Friday afternoon, affecting numerous flights.
Employees at ground service provider Airlines Assistance Switzerland AG (AAS) began the industrial action at 2pm on Friday.
It resulted in 17 flights being grounded, according to media reports:
Six Eurowings flights
3:40 pm to Düsseldorf
3:55 pm to Hamburg
7:15 pm to Düsseldorf
8:15 pm to Berlin
8:30 pm to Cologne Bonn
Three Chair flights
3:15 pm to Rhodes
4:55 p. to Skopje
5:15 pm to Pristina
Two Air Serbia flights
3:10 pm to Belgrade
8:40 pm to Belgrade
One or both GP Aviation flights
1:40 pm to Pristina
8:30 pm to Pristina
One Pegasus flight
4:00 pm to Istanbul
One LOT Polish Airlines flight
7:55 pm to Warsaw
One Air Cairo flight
8:05 pm to Hurghada
One Air Montenegro flight
7:50 pm to Podgorica
Why are the workers striking?
The 220 AAS ground staff are protesting mass layoffs at their company, owned by a German corporation.
They recently lost one of its major customers, and one of its operating licences is about to expire.
