Bestselling Swiss author Martin Suter has written a large number of books, including ‘Small World’, but says he is actually rather lazy.
“I am convinced that I am actually a lazy person,” the Swiss author told German news magazine Der Spiegel.
“If someone had asked me if I write because I have to, I would have said: No, I don’t have to,” he added.
He could well imagine not writing, Suter told the magazine. “But I’ve been doing it for so long now that I would probably have trouble stopping,” he added.
At the same time, the writer spoke out against calls, such as those made by Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, that people should work more and be more diligent.
“I don’t believe that you can save the economy with more work,” Suter said, pointing out that many jobs would disappear anyway due to artificial intelligence. “AI is replacing the hard work at work.”
“The harder working people become, the fewer days they have to work,” he explained, adding “if they’re really hardworking, they can get their work done in three days. But what do they do on the other four days?”
