Azerbaijan, Russia lead incoming rail freight to Georgia in 3Q2025

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 21. Azerbaijan and
Russia were the largest senders of incoming rail freight to Georgia
in the third quarter of 2025, accounting for 32% and 29.1% of total
volumes respectively, the country’s statistics office said,
Trend reports.

As such, other countries combined contributed 38.9%.

Outgoing freight from Georgia was headed primarily to Armenia
(22.1%), Kazakhstan (11.6%) and Russia (6.3%), with the remainder
distributed among other destinations.

Transit freight, which represented 58.1% of the total 3.5
million tonnes of rail cargo in Q3, was largely destined for the
Netherlands (16.2%), Türkiye (10%), China (7.2%), Italy (2.9%) and
Ukraine (2.4%). Brazil accounted for 9.2% of transit cargo sent
through Georgia, followed by Türkiye at 2.6%, with other countries
making up the rest.

Domestic shipments represented 9.5% of total freight, while
international (excluding transit) cargo made up 32.4%. Overall rail
freight in Georgia fell 1.4% compared with the same period in 2024,
underscoring the country’s continuing role as a strategic transit
hub linking Europe, Asia and the region.
