The Telangana Government has prepared a flood management protocol to handle heavy rains and flash floods. It asked district collectors to follow these protocols to better handle the situation and minimise losses.
“In times of heavy rains or flash floods, district collectors should first get in touch with the SDRF unit assigned for their respective districts,” Arvind Kumar, Special Chief Secretary (Disaster Management), Government of Telangana, has said in a statement on Wednesday.
The advisory comes in the wake of the Indian Meteorological Department’s prediction that the monsoon might set in early and that rains might start in Telangana from the last week of this month.
“They should also contact the district fire officer and Fire SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) unit located at the erstwhile district headquarters (Telangana, which used to have 10 districts at the time of bifurcation, has 33 districts),” the statement said.
The district collectors are also asked to immediately contact the Disaster Management Department if they require any support from the NDRF. It also advised the collectors in the SCCL area to tap the services of the collieries’ rescue teams.
Arvind Kumar said that the State set up 12 SDRF teams last year, with each of them comprising 100 police personnel.
Besides, the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) allocated three teams exclusively for Telangana. “We requested the NDRF to allocate more teams to the State for the ensuing rainy season, with a focus on vulnerable districts,” he said.
