After a US Senator sparked uproar by introducing a bill that would eliminate the possibility of dual citizenship for American citizens, we want to hear from US nationals in Europe. Would you give up your US passport to be European?
Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio introduced the bill to the Senate on December 1st that if passed into law would effectively eliminate the possibility of having dual citizenship for Americans.
Moreno’s “Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025” would establish that US citizens “shall owe sole and exclusive allegiance to the United States,” according to a text of the bill.
The proposed law would require any Americans who have already gained dual citizenship in a European country to renounce their European passport or else give up their citizenship to the US.
Many Americans have dismissed the bill as fanciful, publicity-seeking and against the constitution. They believe it could never pass, given how many people it would impact – including the First Lady Melania Trump who is a dual Slovenian- American national.
But we want to hear from our American readers about the issue of dual citizenship and the challenges of renouncing an American passport. Please take a minute to answer the questions in our survey. We’ll use your answers in a future article on The Local.
