More than 13,000 small businesses close in Spain in 2025
Spain ended 2025 with 13,586 fewer businesses, which represents an average of 1,132 small businesses that have disappeared each month throughout last year.
That’s according to data provided by the Union of Professionals and Self-Employed Workers of Spain (UPTA).
“This increase in year-on-year losses shows that the problem not only persists, but is intensifying,” the organisation stressed.
UPTA believes that “the situation of small businesses has become a structural emergency. The increase in fixed costs, the tax burden, unequal competition from large platforms, and the lack of effective public policies for protection and modernisation are causing a constant closure of businesses that are the backbone of the local economy and local employment.”

Sánchez assured that Spain will not “remain silent in the face of violations” of international law.
“Nor can we accept that the territorial integrity of a European state, as is the case with Denmark , is explicitly threatened,” he declared in reference to Trump’s threats over Greenland, during a press conference in Paris following the summit on Ukraine with international partners.
