Lufthansa backs out of buying Spain’s Air Europa
German aviation giant Lufthansa said Tuesday it had abandoned talks on taking a stake in Spanish carrier Air Europa, just days after rival Air France-KLM also said it was dropping out.
The German group had been interested in buying a 25-percent stake in the indebted airline, Spanish news site El Confidencial previously reported, as a way of expanding its presence in key southern European markets.
But Lufthansa said in a statement that “after thorough analyses and intense negotiations we have at this stage decided against further engaging in a capital contribution and shareholding in Air Europa”.
The airline did not give a reason but CEO Carsten Spohr said last week, when the group’s quarterly results were released, that talks with Air Europa were proving difficult.
On Thursday Air France-KLM group also said it was dropping out of the running to acquire a stake.
This leaves Turkish Airlines as the only known remaining bidder.
IAG, owner of British Airways, has a 20-percent stake in Air Europa but last year dropped a bid for a full takeover of the Spanish carrier owing to regulatory constraints.

A forest fire that broke out in the Cádiz town of Tarifa on Tuesday remains active after it forced the evacuation of more than 5,000 vehicles and a significant number of holidaymakers from the numerous hotels, campsites, and beach bars located in the tourist area of the city “in record time”.
It’s believed the origin of the fire may have been a motorhome.
Glovo fined for employing foreigners without work permits
Spanish food delivery company Glovo has added a new fine to its long, multi-million-dollar list of penalties. It’s been fined nearly €900,000 for using delivery drivers who, according to inspectors, were undocumented immigrants between December 2021 and July 2024.
Glovo declined to comment on the gine, although it has announced that it will appeal. At the beginning of the summer, the platform announced that all its delivery workers would be salaried employees starting this July, four years after Spain’s so-called Rider Law came into effect.
Dacia Sandero remains most sold car in Spain
New data shows that the Dacia Sandero retains its title as the best-selling car in Spain, while Toyota regains its lead among brands, surpassing Volkswagen and Hyundai.
The Sandero’s main advantage is of course its competitive price. More than 23,000 units were sold in Spain over the course of the last year, according to data from Spanish vehicle associations Anfac, Faconauto and Ganvam.
The podium is completed by the Hyundai Tucson in second place (2,360 registrations in July) and the Seat Ibiza in third (2,157 units sold in July).
