More heavy rain in store for eastern Spain, record number of jihadist arrests in 2025 and more news on Monday December 29th.

Body of Spanish child found after boat in Indonesia sinks

Indonesian authorities  found the lifeless body of 12-year-old Lia on Monday, one of the three Spanish children who went missing in the shipwreck of a boat carrying a Spanish family in Komodo National Park.

“The family said it is Lia’s body,” an Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency official confirmed.

Rescuers, joined by police vessels and professional divers, began the fourth day of the search for the missing Spaniards – an adult and three children – on Monday.

The vessel was carrying 11 people when it sank in the Padar Island Strait near the popular tourist destination of Labuan Bajo on Friday night, state news agency Antara said.

More heavy rain in store for eastern Spain

While the search continues for two people missing after the severe storm that battered Andalusia and Valencia over the weekend, Spain is preparing for the arrival of more bad weather on Monday.

Spanish weather agency Aemet forecasts stormy weather will continue to bring locally heavy rainfall to the Valencian region, the Balearic Islands (where snow is expected at high altitudes), Almería and Murcia.

No precipitation is expected in the rest of mainland Spain.

Record number of jihadist arrests in Spain in 2025

Counterterrorism operations by Spain’s Security Forces have resulted in a provisional tally of 100 arrests in Spain for crimes related to jihadism in 2025.

This again sets a record for the third consecutive year since the historic peak in 2004, the year of the Madrid train bombings.

The 100 arrests in 64 counter-terrorism operations represent a significant increase compared to 2024, a year that ended with 81 arrests related to the threat of jihadist terrorism, according to statistics from Spain’s Ministry of the Interior.

Catalonia was once again the region in Spain with the highest number of arrests for this type of crime, with 33 arrests.
