Spain to sizzle in 40C this week
Spain is preparing for a period of intense and persistent heat starting this Monday, the first of its kind after a wetter and colder spring than what has become the norm in recent years.
According to national weather agency Aemet, temperatures could hover around or exceed 40C in some southern areas, such as Córdoba, Seville, Ciudad Real, Jaén, and Toledo.
Northern regions will remain much cooler by comparison but in Madrid temperatures are expected to reach 35C by Thursday.

Rate of sick leave rises sharply in Spain
The Bank of Spain has published a report in which it warns about the increase in the number of workers taking sick leave.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, this figure never exceeded 2.5 percent, and now it’s approaching 4.5 percent, making Spain the third EU country after Norway and Slovenia with a workforce taking the most time off for health reasons.
Spain’s divisive housing law turns two
It’s been two years since Spain’s Socialist-led government introduced an amended housing law which introduced price caps and rent controls as a means of addressing the country’s deepening housing crisis.
But more than 700 days since that legislation the situation is arguably worse than ever, and many criticise the law for making landlords take more long-term rental properties off the market to skirt the rules, reducing the stock and inflating prices further still.

Roland Garros pays ‘unforgettable’ tribute to retired ‘King of Clay’ Nadal
Rafael Nadal was given a rousing reception as the ‘King of Clay’ stepped onto Court Philippe Chatrier for the final time on Sunday in an “unforgettable” ceremony to celebrate his career at the French Open.
The 38-year-old, who retired from tennis last November, was serenaded by the Roland Garros crowd, with spectators wearing different coloured t-shirts to create the message “14 RG, Rafa”.
Nadal dominated the French Open after winning on debut as a teenager in 2005, lifting the trophy a record-breaking 14 times.
