Thousands of firefighters have been battling huge blazes in Spain and Portugal on Saturday, as parts of southern Europe remain gripped by a record-breaking heatwave.

Spain’s national weather agency Aemet said that temperatures had exceeded 44C in several places on Saturday and warned of a very high risk of fires across “practically the entire country”.

More than than 1,500 sq km (579 sq miles) have been devastated by the flames in Spain and seven people have died.

A heatwave has scorched swathes of southern Europe this week, prompting wildfires in Spain, Portugal, Greece, France and the Balkans.
