Switzerland went through two heatwaves this summer: one in June and the other in the first half of August. But relief is on the way, the country’s official meteorological service says.
MeteoSchweiz, which had issued a level 3 heatwave warning until August 17th, now says that that the end of the extremely hot weather is near.
What weather can we expect, and when?
According to MeteoSchweiz, “the influx of warm air from the southwest will be interrupted, and replaced by drier, cooler air. This configuration will put an end to the heatwave.”
For the time being, the end of the heatwave is expected for Sunday evening August 17th for the Plateau, the Lake Geneva region, and Valais.
“However, it is possible that the heatwave will end earlier, between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, depending on the timing of the arrival of the colder air,” the weather service added.
And what happens then?
After an initial cooling at the end of the weekend, the trend is expected to continue for the second half of the week.
“An active disturbance could defy the high pressure system established over western Europe to bring us humid and colder air,” MeteoSchweiz said.
Starting Thursday, August 21st, weather models “are showing a clear sign of cooling with precipitation.”
However, as this MeteoSchweiz map indicates, temperatures will remain warm, in the 20s:
