Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) has announced enhanced compensation measures for passengers affected by flight delays and cancellations, effective May 20, 2025. These updates aim to provide better support for travelers facing unexpected disruptions.

Key Compensation Updates

International Flights:

  • Delays over 2 hours: Airlines must provide free food, beverages, and communication channels (e.g., phone, email).
  • Delays over 5 hours: In addition to the above, passengers are entitled to at least 1,500 baht in cash compensation, credit shells, travel vouchers, flyer miles, or equivalents within 14 days. Refunds are available if travel plans are canceled.
  • Delays over 10 hours: Compensation increases to between 2,000 and 4,500 baht, depending on flight distance. Airlines must also provide accommodation and shuttle services if needed.
  • Cancellations: Similar assistance as for delays over 10 hours, unless the airline cancels at least seven days in advance or arranges alternative flights within three hours of the original schedule.

Domestic Flights:

  • Delays over 5 hours: Cash compensation increases from 600 to 1,200 baht.
  • Cancellations: Compensation rises from 1,200 to 1,500 baht.

In both cases, airlines may offer credit shells, travel vouchers, flyer miles, or equivalents. These compensations do not apply if disruptions result from unforeseen and unavoidable external factors.

Tarmac Delays:

For passengers delayed on board:

  • Cabins must remain ventilated and air-conditioned.
  • Access to toilets must be maintained.
  • Immediate medical services should be available if needed.
  • If the delay exceeds three hours without a confirmed take-off time, passengers must be allowed to disembark unless safety or air traffic control considerations prevent it.(Bangkok Post)

These measures are designed to enhance passenger rights and ensure better treatment during travel disruptions.
