Madrid to open a centre for male victims of rape
The Community of Madrid will open the first Specialised Comprehensive Care Centre in Spain for male victims of sexual violence in October, with an annual investment of €500,000.
According to regional data, the health services of the Community of Madrid treat an average of 100 men per year who have been victims of rape and sexual assault committed by other men.

Barcelona installs special bins to handle tourists’ rubbish
Barcelona City Council has implemented a new measure to improve waste management around the Sagrada Familia, one of the city’s busiest tourist spots.
They are ten self-compacting bins which are capable of handling five times the amount of rubbish of conventional rubbish bins, which will mean they have to be emptied only two times a day as opposed to the current eight times.
More of these bins are set to be installed in other parts of Barcelona which are dealing with a high volume of holidaymakers.
Spain receives 1.3 million more tourists in Q1 2025
Spain welcomed 21.1 million international air passengers in the first quarter of 2025, registering a 6.4 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to the latest data from Turespaña.
This represents nearly 1.3 million additional arrivals, with low-cost carriers accounting for one million of this total increase.
In March, the number of passengers arriving in Spain from international airports reached eight million, representing a 5.7 percent rise compared to the same month in 2024.
Duplantis and Biles win at Madrid’s Laureus Awards
For the second year in a row, the Spanish capital hosted Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday night, an annual award ceremony honouring individuals and teams from the world of sports along with sporting achievements throughout the year.
Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis and American gymnast Simone Biles shared the top honours. Another gymnast, Rebeca Andrade, won the Comeback of the Year award after winning gold in the floor at the Paris Games.
Barcelona’s Spanish football prodigy Lamine Yamal won the Breakthrough of the Year award, while Real Madrid took the team award.
Rafael Nadal, who retired from tennis last November at the age of 38, was given a Sports Icon award and surfer Kelly Slater a Lifetime Achievement award.
