Spain’s train strike is back on for 24-hours on Tuesday April 1st. Find out which services will be affected if you’re due to travel that day.
This Tuesday, April 1st, the CGT railway sector union will continue its 24-hour Renfe and Adif walkouts.
The union is striking to denounce alleged breaches by the Ministry of Transport during the transfer of the Rodalies service to the government of Catalonia.
Originally the 24-hour stoppages were planned for March 17th, March 26th and April 1st and there were further suspended services organised for March 19th, 24th, 28th and April 3rd, but at the last minute they were called off and an agreement signed.
CGT, however, has decided to continue its strike on April 1st despite the agreement with other unions.
CGT believes that “the agreement signed between the Ministry of Transport, the Generalitat de Catalunya, SEMAF, CCOO, UGT, and SCF guarantees absolutely nothing; on the contrary, it opens a gap for public railway companies to bleed dry”.
The strike on April 1st will run from midnight to 11:59 pm. and will affect the entire country. Renfe’s minimum essential services will be:
Cercanías: 75 percent of normal service during rush hour.
Media Distancia: 65 percent of normal service.
High Speed/Long Distance: 72 percent of normal service.
In the Basque Country, minimum services will drop to 50 percent on Cercanías during rush hour and 25 percent during normal hours.

In Andalusia, demonstrations will be held on the same day starting at 11:00am in Seville, at the Santa Justa station, and in Málaga, at the María Zambrano station.
A demonstration will also take place in front of the Ministry of Transport in Madrid on April 3rd.
Given the scope of this Renfe strike, travellers are advised to pan in advance.
Renfe is urging travellers to read up ahead of time on their official channels and stations and check schedules regularly as they may be subject to last-minute changes.
If possible, seek alternative transportation or avoid non-urgent travel. If your chosen train is cancelled, check for ticket refund or exchange options.
