Her remarks come at a pivotal moment for transatlantic relations. Friday’s dramatic exchange in the White House saw Trump and U.S. Vice President JD Vance berating Zelenskyy, accusing Kyiv of being ungrateful and overplaying its diplomatic position.
The fallout from the meeting has thrown Ukraine’s Western support into question.
In response to heightening tensions between the U.S. and its allies, European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are gathering in London on Sunday to reaffirm their support for Kyiv.
The high-stakes summit will include Zelenskyy himself, as well as other key EU leaders such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Council President António Costa.
Germany’s foreign minister also urged the Bundestag to immediately unlock a stalled €3 billion aid package for Ukraine, while pressing the European Council to approve a broader financial and military assistance plan.
Baerbock also issued a direct warning regarding the shifting rhetoric in Washington.
“We can never accept a reversal of perpetrator and victim,” she said. “Such a reversal would mean the end of international law — and with it, the security of most states. And in the long run, it would also be fatal for the future of the United States.”
