Switzerland could ban access to mobile phones in schools
Following a parliamentary motion to this effect, the Federal Council said it is ready to consider banning smartphones in class for under-16-year-olds, given the risks to the health and concentration abilities of young people.
The government is basing its readiness to implement this measure on research suggesting that following TikTok, Instagram and other social media on their smartphones disrupts the development of children and adolescents, also damaging their mental health as well as limiting their ability to learn.
Since the introduction of smartphones, rates of depression, anxiety disorders, and suicidal thoughts among young people have increased sharply, research referenced by the Federal Council indicates.

Swiss economy is more dynamic than expected
The Economy Ministry has revised upwards its forecasts for Swiss GDP growth, estimating an increase of 0.9 percent for the whole of 2024, thanks in part to the industrial and service sectors.
Consumption and investment also contributed to the momentum on the spending side.
This is what emerges from a press release published by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) on Thursday.
The industrial sector recorded a growth of 2.7 percent, driven by a strong performance of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, and its exports, which increased by 4.2 percent.
Service industry, retail trade, and the transport and communication sectors also experienced an upward trend.

Rents in Switzerland continue to soar
The Federal Council does not expect much improvement in the rental market in the near future, according to a report it published this week.
“The housing shortage will continue, the rents will rise, and this situation will continue in the medium term.”
Ageing of the population and the fact that people are living alone in big apartments better suited to families “creates an imbalance between demand and supply,” the report states.
There is, however, good news on the very near horizon: on March 3rd, the Federal Housing Office is expected to lower its reference rate from 1.75 to 1.50 percent, which means that tenants who signed their lease after December 2nd, 2023 will be able to claim a rent reduction.
