The strikes, two days ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration as US president, follow deadly attacks this week on the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih — home town of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy — and the bombardment of western Ukrainian regions. Those strikes triggered nationwide preventive power cuts and prompted neighboring Poland to scramble military jets.
Trump has vowed to bring a swift end to the war, although it’s unclear how he’ll achieve a settlement between Moscow and Kyiv.
Two out of four ballistic missiles and 24 of 39 drones were shot down across the country overnight, according to Ukrainian air defence forces. At least 10 people were wounded in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said on Telegram.
With both sides leaning increasingly on combat drones, the Russian Defense Ministry said 46 unmanned vehicles had been shot down overnight over Russian territory.
