Four dead, one injured in accident at AM/NS Hazira plant in Gujarat

Four workers have died, and one person was injured in an accident that happened within the ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) plant at Hazira in South Gujarat on Tuesday evening.

Citing an equipment failure, the company stated, “We are sorry to report an accident at COREX plant due to an equipment failure at AMNS Hazira Operations.

The accident occurred around 6:00 pm IST today during the restart of the unit after shutdown. Four contractual workers of a private company performing maintenance on a lift (elevator) nearby were embroiled in the impact and could not survive. One worker was lightly injured and was immediately shifted to the Hospital at the plant premises and is recovering.”

“We are extending all support to the families of the affected personnel. All emergency protocols were activated immediately and the area has been cordoned off. We are working closely with relevant authorities on ground and have initiated an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.,” the statement quoting company spokesperson stated. 

‘Safety remains a cornerstone of our operations, and this incident will push us to learn further,” it added.
