Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy Award on Saturday night in New York City.

Hunter, who plays both wide receiver and cornerback, garnered 552 first-place votes for 2,231 total points. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty finished in second place with 309 first-place votes and 2,017 points.

The 214-point margin is the closest in a Heisman race since 2009, when Mark Ingram beat out Toby Gerhart by 28 votes.  Hunter totaled 80.14% of the points, the 11th-highest in Heisman Trophy history.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami (Fla.) quarterback Cam Ward finished third and fourth, respectively.

Hunter is just the second Colorado player to win the Heisman, joining RB Rashaan Salaam (1994). He’s also the first non-quarterback to win the award since 2020 and just the fifth non-quarterback to win the award in the 21st century.

This was only the second time in the past decade when a pair of non-quarterbacks finished in the top two of the Heisman voting. The last time was in 2015, when running back Derrick Henry of Alabama won the award and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey was the runner-up.

Hunter has totaled 92 receptions for 1,152 yards (12.5 yards per catch) and 14 touchdowns this season as a wideout. Both Hunter’s reception and touchdown totals lead the Big 12, and he has posted 100-plus receiving yards in seven games. Meanwhile, he has registered four interceptions, a conference-high 11 passes defended and 32 combined tackles.

During the regular season, he played 688 defensive snaps and 672 offensive snaps. Hunter and the No. 23-ranked Buffs (9-3) play No. 17 BYU (10-2) in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28.

Prior to spending the past two seasons in Boulder, Hunter played for Jackson State in 2022, along with current Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders; Hunter, Shedeur Sanders and head coach Deion Sanders all left JSU for CU following the 2022 regular season.

Hunter is now the first Heisman winner to ever play in the FCS. He has the second-best odds to be the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
